I’ve smoked herb my entire adult life and practiced photography since high school. In 2014, after moving back to California, I got my med card and started ordering weed through Weedmaps. What I found was that almost nobody was photographing the product, and most the images that did exist were terrible. I knew I could do better. I spent the next year and a half shooting on my living room table in San Diego before it ever became a paying gig.
In 2016 I relocated to Oakland to pursue cannabis as a full time subject. I started as a part time menu photographer at a dispensary, while simultaneously freelancing for Weedmaps, Dope Magazine, and Cannabis Now, working my way up to associate photo director. From there I co-ran a studio in Oakland, spent nearly four years shooting out of a van across the country and internationally, and now have landed in a 1,700 square foot warehouse studio in Nevada City.
I’ve shot on 35mm through the Rif in Morocco, on farms in northeast Thailand, in grow rooms and across multi-hundred acre farms throughout the states. The places I’ve been and the things I’ve seen are in every image I make, whether you’re looking at a trichome under a microscope or a portrait shot on film in Jamaica.
There’s a whole world out there that just gets passed by.
